BELL

MARY BELL, age 64, died November 18, 2003, in Houston, Texas, where she lived most of her life. Born in Muskegon, MI, she was raised in Houston, where she graduated from St. Agnes Academy. Mary is survived by three adult children, Ed Bell and wife Mary and daughter Amanda, Bill Bell, and Abi Williams and husband Scott; and four siblings, Dell Shields, Barbara Trepagnier, Abi Porter, and Bill Heasley.

On July 28, 1974, Mary Bell set a course for living one day at a time. This led her to a career in counseling, helping individuals and families suffering from addiction. Mary was a dynamic counselor and advisor to many. She was respected and loved by those she helped. Following her work in various addiction treatment settings in South Texas and Louisiana, Mary returned to Houston, encouraged by several families to bring her gifts and talents to this community.

Mary Bell’s lifework culminated in 1985, with the establishment of The Center for Recovering Families, where she served as executive director. Through The Center, she dedicated her life to helping individuals and their families achieve an enhanced quality of life, free from mood-altering chemicals.

In April 2003, Mary Bell was honored with The Jay Waggoner Service Award, given to that person who illustrates a dedication and commitment to personally serving and helping others find the path of recovery from alcoholism and addiction. Mary Bell earned this honor because she consistently went above and beyond the call of duty. Tireless in her approach, she saw helping others as her life’s mission. Countless Houstonians will recall the hours she spent with them and their families – always listening, sometimes gently confronting, and oftentimes busting through denial so prevalent in the disease of addiction. It mattered not what day or time it was, Mary Bell put serving and helping others above all else.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Paul Walker and the Palliative Acute Care Unit at M.D. Anderson for their compassionate and attentive care in making Mary’s final days as comfortable as possible.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 22 at St. John the Divine Church at 2450 River Oaks Boulevard. Immediately following the service, the family will host a celebration of Mary Bell’s life in Sumner’s Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to The Center for Recovering Families, a division of The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston, 303 Jackson Hill, Houston, Texas 77007, so that Mary Bell’s legacy of helping others will live on.
