Interment will follow at Canon Mathis Cemetery. STANFORD Jessie Marion Stanford, 65, died November 21, 2006, after an amazing two and a half year battle against lung cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Dewey G. and Jessie Stanford. She is survived by family and friends too numerous to list and her partner of 25 years, Cassie Poulos. She was a proud native Houstonian, and she lived in the same neighborhood until 2000, when she moved to her farm in Waller. She was the office manager for the Law Offices of Jeffrey Newport for over 20 years. Her life was extended by her incredible spirit and will to live and the loving kindness, support, and assistance of dear friends and family who lent her their strength and energy during her incredible journey. She was thankful for every call, visit, card and prayer and felt that she was blessed every day by the love of the people around her. Special thanks go to Doctors Patricia Salvato, Jorge Quesada, Elizabeth Bloom, Joseph Varon, Evelyn Shearer-Poor, William Cohn, Omar Berakat, their support staffs, the nurses and pharmacist at OnCol Therapeutics, and the staff of Houston Hospice. These talented, caring providers did all they could to preserve and respect her quality of life. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 30th, 2006, at 1:30pm at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 811 14th Street, Hempstead, Texas, with a celebration of life to follow at her beloved farm in Waller. Mr. Shirley Foster Shirley age 73 of Magnolia passed away Saturday Nov. 25, 2006. He is preceded in death by parents, Carl Lindsey and Dolli B. Shirley and two brothers, Carl and Noble Shirley. John Everett Wren, also known as “Sammy” after his father, died suddenly on Friday, October 20, 2006 at his home in Lake Livingston surrounded by the nature he loved. Born in Houston in 1936 to Sam Edmund Wren and Dollye Blanche Howard, he enlisted in the Air Force and later became a Master Electrician. In his mid-twenties, John met and married the love of his life, Bettye Jane Turner and became the father to Betty’s four children. John and Bettye had a child, Kelly, who remained his closest ally until his death. Known for his sense of humor as well as his quick temper, John will be remembered by his family and friends as a straight talking man’s man, who, if he liked you, would give you the shirt off his back. Admired for being a good provider, a loyal friend, and a great dancer, John’s most distinctive physical characteristics were his striking blue eyes and infectious smile. John is survived by his daughter, Kelly Wren, her husband Jason Whittington and their children, Madison and Jax; his son Richard Turner and his wife, Martha and children Amani, Gisele, Patrick, Sarah, Michael and Caitlin; his daughter Pamela Turner, her husband Michael Hobbs and their daughter, Tara; his son Michael Turner and his wife Anita Fiddleman; his daughter Tracye Stutes and her children, Nicholas, John, and Ryan. John’s surviving siblings are his sisters Jeannie Myers, Mary Loving and Patricia Smallwood, and his brothers Billy Wren and Edmond Wren. He is preceded in death by his wife Bettye, brother Donald Wren, and parents Dollye and Sam Wren. GEORGAL Elizabeth (Betty) Georgal died October 14th at the age of 89 in Tomball, Texas. Betty lived most of her life in North Tonawanda, NY where she was honored to be the first President of the Women’s Auxiliary of Rescue Fire Company No. 5. She continued as an active member for many years. Betty and her late husband, Joseph, owned and operated a ceramic studio for many years on Oliver St. Betty was a highly respected instructor in ceramics as well as talented and artistic. She hand painted many porcelain figures and pieces of fine china as special gifts for her children and grandchildren and, as she was able, for her great grandchildren. Betty also resided with her husband, Joe, in Adrian, Michigan for about 12 years. Betty and Joe were very active in the Adrian Senior Citizens Center. They then moved to Tomball, Texas where she resided for 10 years. She leaves behind two sons and their spouses, Jack and Elli Georgal of Adrian, MI, and Skip and Danita Georgal of Hockley, Texas. Betty was also the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren. She was very pleased to also have 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A memorial mass will be held at 9:30am on Friday, November 10, 2006 at St. Christopher Church, 2660 Niagara Falls Blvd., Tonawanda, NY, followed by internment of her ashes at Mt. Mrs. Glueck worked for the City of Waller as City Secretary for 30 years. She loved to play dominos at the Hockley Community Center and loved gardening. She belonged to the Waller Lioness Club and was Secretary-Treasurer at First United Methodist Church in Waller. She is preceded in death by her husband, W. T. Peggy Lou (Slye) Miller, age 78 of Tomball, formerly of Waller, was born June 29, 1928. Peggy graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas in 1945. After graduation, the family moved to Waller County. Peggy continued her education at Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. While visiting her parents in Waller, Peggy met Bennie F. Miller. They married March 1, 1947. Peggy was a stay-at-home mom who loved taking care of her family. She loved to cook, sew, do needlework, and loved to entertain. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a charter member of the Grace Evangelical Methodist Church. Peggy passed away on October 7, 2006. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Gladys Slye; her husband, Bennie Miller; and an infant son, Gary Lee Miller. She is survived by her children, Deborah Slye Miller of Dallas, Mike Miller and wife Theresa of Waller, and Terry Miller and wife Donna of Manahawkin, New Jersey. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brian Rollings and wife Stephanie of Tyler, Brett Rollings of Maui, Hawaii, Krista Miller Olson and husband Bryan of Waller, Jordan and Matthew Miller of Manahawkin, New Jersey. Judge A. M. McCaig August 13, 1919 – July 21, 2006 Albert Marvin (A. M.) McCaig was born August 13, 1919 in Madison County, Texas, near Normangee, to Albert Blakley McCaig and Donie Frances Williams McCaig. Following several years of ill health, he died peacefully on July 21, 2006. He is predeceased by his parents; sister, Opal Inez Kruft; brothers Marlin, William, Gene and Donald; and grandson Raymond Clayton “Clay” Arnold, Jr. He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Nina Lou Wilson McCaig; son, A. M. “Buddy” McCaig and his wife, Kitty; daughters, Nancy Yvonne Arnold, of Waller; Linda Sue Engel and her husband, Wally Engel, of Allen, Texas; and Betty Kay Hart and her husband, Don, of Waller. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Nancy Rae Arnold Smith and husband Jerry; David Scott Arnold; Amanda Blakley McCaig; Donald Edward McCaig; Sarah Len Somers de Avillez and husband Gustavo “Gus”; Matthew Russell Somers, serving with the United States Army; Elizabeth Leigh Hart; Thomas Wilson Hart; Rebecca Erin Hart, two step-grandchildren, Sarah Engel and David Engel; and one great-granddaughter, Ashlynn Smith. Also surviving him is his brother-in-law, Roy Kruft; sister-in-law, Theresa Helfrich McCaig; and dozens of cousins, nieces, nephews, all of whom knew him as Marvin. He also leaves many treasured friends. He moved to the Brookshire area of Waller County in 1940, and on August 30, 1941, he married Nina Lou Wilson of Madisonville. They lived in Houston and San Antonio until he entered the Army. In 1945, they moved to Hockley, then to Waller, where they made their home. Both long-time members of Waller Baptist Church, he was, at the time of his death, Deacon Emeritus. His was a life of community service, first as a charter member of the Waller Volunteer Fire Department and a city council member in the early days of Waller’s incorporation, and a faithful member of the Waller Lions Club for nearly forty years. As a charter member of the Waller Chamber of Commerce, he later served as president of that body. In 1958, he was elected Waller County Commissioner, serving for two terms. He went on to serve as Waller city judge, two terms as justice of the peace, and nearly three terms as Waller County Judge, retiring near the end of his third term because of ill health. He became known around the community as simply “Judge.” A. M. served on the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) for nine years, one year as president. He was an officer with the Sam Houston Council of the Boy Scouts of America, was a director for the Memorial Hospital System, and was on the advisory board for the Brenham State School. He also served for ten years as a director for Guaranty Bond State Bank in Waller. In 2000, the Monaville Sons of Hermann selected him for the Humanitarian of the Year Award, and in 2005, he was inducted into the Blinn College Alumni Hall of Honor in Brenham. A. M. and Nina owned a number of businesses in the community, beginning with a Sinclair service station in 1951, adding a Western Auto store in 1952. He and his partner, Roy Cook, owned McCaig-Cook Chevrolet in Hempstead, later selling the dealership to Lawrence Marshall. He was a real estate broker, and maintained farming and ranching enterprises for decades in Waller and Madison Counties. Services will be held Monday, July 24, 2006 at 11:00am at Waller Baptist Church, with Dr. Charles Wisdom and Bro. Britton Kelley officiating, followed by internment at the Waller Cemetery. She grew up in Houston and attended schools there, graduating from Cypress Fairbanks High School in 1970. On September 25, 1970 she married Jim Wheeler in Houston. In 1973 they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she eventually took a part time job as a school bus driver, a job she continued for the next twenty-five years, twelve of those years driving in Colorado since moving there in 1993. Mrs. Wheeler especially enjoyed interacting with the special needs children on her bus. She also enjoyed crocheting and cooking – she was a great cook! She had a love for life, a wonderful mother, and was also considered a “second mother” to countless others. Mrs. Wheeler, age 54, died Friday, July 14, 2006 at North Colorado Medical Center in the Hospice and Palliative Care Inpatient Unit. She loved her home and always told her family, "Well, they told me it was a mistake to move to Texas, but if I had it to do over, I'd make the same mistake again." Pastor Andy Qualls Andy was born on December 4, 1936 on a farm in Hempstead, Texas. His dad died one month before he was six years old, leaving his mother with a small farm and nine children to raise. He was raised in Hempstead and Waller County and had this testimony…that he had become a success in his own home town. He had a heart for Hempstead and declared that it would become known as “Hempstead, the town of Brotherly Love”. He has worked hard with the Hempstead Ministerial Alliance in order to bring Unity to our Community! She married Olen Peterson on September 16, 1933. He died on August 25, 1983. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and an associate member of New Hope Methodist Church. She was a Past Matron and fifty year member of Waller Chapter #1047 order of the Eastern Star and member of Chaparral Genealogical Society. She was also a member of the Waller County Historical Commission and Society and wrote articles for their publications. Preceding her in death are her husband, Olen Peterson, and sisters and brothers, Alice Wilson, Edith Smith, Minnie Barbee, Sydmore Godkin, End Long, and Ronald Godkin. ![]() John H. “Jack” Rafferty, of Hempstead passed away on the 7th day of April, 2006, at the age of 84, from pulmonary fibrosis. He was born November 19, 1921 in Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Rafferty and Rena Rafferty Keaton, and one sister, Mary Rafferty. He is survived by his wife, Lois Robertson Rafferty of Hempstead; 2 sons, John Herbert Rafferty III of Orlando, Florida; Sean Michael Rafferty of Columbus, Ohio; 2 daughters, Joyce Marshall; and Colleen Grayek of Orlando, Florida; 3 stepchildren, James Williams, Debra Fox and husband, Craig; and Michael Williams and wife, Lorena of Hempstead; 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 3 step grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by two brothers, Hugh Rafferty and wife, Cathy; Patrick Rafferty and wife, JoAnn; sister, Rosemary Walker, all of Houston; and sister, Helene Geers of Brenham; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and a host of friends. Rafferty, a Veteran who served his country during World War II with the 1278th Engineer Combat Regiment, 1st Army, also served in Okinawa during the Korean campaign as a Staff Officer in RYCOM Headquarters. Seven years later he returned to Korea and served with the 8th Engineer Batallion, 1st Calvery Division, deployed along the DMZ. During the Vietnam conflict, he worked in nuclear weapons R&D at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. He retired from the Army as Lt Colonel on August 31, 1969, in Ankra, Turkey while serving as Logistics Officer, Joint United States Mutual Mission to Turkey. At his retirement ceremony, he was awarded the Legion of Merit by the US Secretary of the Army (2nd highest peacetime award) for his work in modernization of the Turkish Army Logistical System. He served as County Road Administrator in Waller County from January 1, 1970 until his retirement on December 31, 1984. After retiring from Waller County, he was employed by Prairie View A&M University from 1986 until his retirement as Director of Telecommunications on January 31, 2003. He was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Hempstead, Texas. Jack was also a dedicated member of the Hempstead Lions Club for over 35 years, having served Lions International as District Governor of the 7-county area around Houston in 1993 – 1994. He was presently employed by Jacobs Engineering, contracted out to Nasa Johnson Space Center. This was his dream job.
