GOSLER Our beloved Lela Gosler went home to her Heavenly Father on the afternoon of New Years Day at the age of 87. Lela was born on September 5, 1913, the second of 15 children of Sallie and George Washington Johnson on a rural farm near Hooks, Texas. At the age of 20, she arrived in Cleveland, Texas, and began working for the family of John and Lucy Guinn. She stayed with the family for the next 21 years, through the death of "Father Guinn", and then, "Mother Guinn". In 1955 she married Herbert Gosler, and they began farming and raising cattle on their homestead in Hockley, Texas. Both Lela and her husband were devoted members of Macedonia United Methodist Church, which was a big part of their lives. Lela was renowned for her beautiful quilts, many of which she made for family and friends and generously contributed for raffles and fund-raising events in the church and community. She was a talented and skilled homemaker. Lela was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herbert, in 1991, six sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her sisters, Jessie Badgett of Haworth, Oklahoma, Mary Lee Pannell of Duncan, Oklahoma, Laura Jean Huff of Texarkana, Texas, and a brother, Thomas Johnson of Haworth, Oklahoma. She will be remembered lovingly and missed by her family, neighbors and friends. The funeral service at Macedonia United Methodist Church will be on Friday, January 5, at 2:00 P.M. Interment will follow at the Macedonia Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Macedonia United Methodist Church of Hockley, Texas. NEWELL Lester Newell, age 82, died January 2, 2001 in Waller, Tx. Lester is preceded in death by his wife, Isabel Newell. FREY Ronald Dale Frey, age 35, Died January 4, 2001 In Bryan, Tx. Ronnie is preceded in death by his Father, Richard C. FISHER Joyce Evelyn Fisher, born on May 23, 1921 in Blue Rapids, Kansas, died in her home in Hockley, Texas on January 12, 2001. She is survived by her loving family, which includes her husband, Robert A. Fisher; daughters Sharron J. Hoppens and Patricia E. Hall; son David Martin and wife Marilyn; step-son Steve Fisher; step-daughter Judi Ratliff and husband Roger; grandchildren Charles Reid, Jeff Reid, Holly Mynk, Natalie Ocken, Spencer Williams, Alethia Theisen, Benjamin Martin, Elizabeth Martin and Zachary Martin; and great-grandchildren Dominique and Preston Ocken, Taylor and Brandon Mynk, Timothy and Christopher Reid, Caris and Melanie Williams and Brad and Brett Ratliff. BRADFORD Mary (Strawn) Bradford, age 64, formerly of Navasota, known as "MeMe" entered Heaven on January 17, 2001 after fighting a long courageous battle of leukemia. She was born on August 8, 1936 and graduated from Pasadena High School in Pasadena, Texas in 1955. She married Tommy Bradford April 14, 1956. She is currently a member of Christ Community Baptist Church of Prairie View. Her son, William Keith Bradford precedes Mary in death along with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. William Forrest Strawn, brother Edward (Eddie) Strawn and great niece Tonia Marie Brunette. He was born February 2, 1909, in the farm community of Authon, Texas in Parker County and is the son of Marion Andrew and Willie Maude Smart. He married Gertrude D. Davis April 12, 1928 in Palo Pinto County, Texas. As a young man, Andrew worked in grocery business, bakery business, and then worked as a lineman for an independent telephone company. Andrew and Gertrude owned several small independent telephone companies, he being the lineman and she the telephone operator. Andrew then went to work for Gulf Oil Corporation. He started as a lineman and worked up to construction foreman. He left Gulf after 23 years and started his own business, Walker & Son Lawnmower and Bicycle Service, in Houston, Texas. Mr. Walker loved people and enjoyed visiting. He also enjoyed working, fishing, and playing forty-two. He was a member of the Macedonia Methodist Church and also the Waller Masonic Lodge #808. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; son and wife, Howard and Helen Walker of Irving, Texas and Angel Fire, New Mexico; son and wife, Davis and Marietta Walker of Waller, Texas; grandchildren, Andrew Walker of Dallas, Charles Walker and wife Olivia of Denton, Texas, Nancy and Mike Gonzales of Irving, Brittan Walker and wife Patricia of Houston, Denise Tubb of Houston, Andrew E. He went to be with the Lord on February 18, 2001. Interment will follow at Fieldstore Cemetery. BLUME Sherry Spitzer Blume passed away April 1, 2001. She was born on March 15, 1947. She was the daughter of the late Garrett and Bertha Spitzer. She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Butch Blume, son Matt and his fiance Suzanne Jordan, son Judd and his wife Renae and her grandchildren Leah and Erin Blume. Also mourning her passing are her brother Doyle Spitzer and his wife Pat, sister Jan Wegand and her husband Dan, sister Lu Henske and her husband Russell, her mother-in-law Mary Blume, her brother-in-law Rick Blume and wife JoAnn, her sister-in-law Theresa Ingram, and numerous nieces and nephews. Hakemack age 78 of Waller, formerly of Houston, passed away Wednesday April 4, 2001 at home. Mr. Hakemack was a member of the Air Corp for 4 years and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Schiel was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Meta Schiel; his brothers, Chester, Pete, and Walter Schiel, Sr.; and sister, Alma Schiel. Mr. Schiel is survived by his sister, Irene Spencer and sister-in-law, Madeline Schiel; nephews, Walter Schiel, Jr. and wife Gladys, and Louis Schiel; nieces, Barbara White and husband Curtis, Florence Peterson and husband Marshall, Gloria Treichel and husband Leonard, and Donna Hill and husband Jody; 7 great-nephews; 5 great-nieces; 1 great-great-nephew; and 3 great-great-nieces. Interment will follow at Roberts Cemetery. Uncle Bennie Thats what he was to the people that loved him most, his nieces and nephews. Uncle Bennie never married, and never had a family of his own. He was too busy helping take care of Grandma, Meta Schiel, who had the overwhelming task of trying to raise 5 young children after Grandpa, Louis Schiel, died. He continued his role of caregiver for his mom, living with her until she died at the age of 93. He worked at Katy Water Well Drilling Company for 15 years, then for Harris County, where he retired with 26 years of service. Uncle Bennie attended Christ United Church in Cypress, Texas, where he was baptized as an infant and confirmed on August 18, 1940. Uncle Bennie loved his nieces and nephews, and took great pleasure in inviting them over to eat lunch that he had cooked for them. He also loved visiting the Hardware store, almost on a daily basis, where he would visit with the family and customers. He took great pleasure in talking to folks, and had a mind sharp as a tack. He had such an incredible memory, and would often times surprise people with the details he could remember about things they had told him, or significant dates such as birthdays. We will miss Uncle Bennie, but are extremely grateful that we were blessed to have him as part of our family, and part of our lives, for so many years. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery. GARRETT ARTHUR MELVIN GARRETT 8/18/1917 6/19/2001 Arthur Melvin Garrett was born 8-18-17 near Monaville, to James A. and Stella Garrett. Arthur was well-known in Waller County as a hard worker and devout Christian. He loved playing 42 and was an excellent gardener. A self-taught electrician, he installed the electric wiring in many businesses along old Highway 290 into Houston and in most of the residences near his home in the Field Store-Union area. He built three houses, three barns, countless outbuildings, and the Quonset hut on Old Hwy 290 and FM 362. As a member of IBEW 716, his proudest accomplishments were his work on the Ship Channel Bridge at Corpus Christi and in Bush Intercontinental Airports Terminal C. He grew peanuts for the war effort during World War II, blacksmithed, welded, raised chickens, gardened organically, ran cattle, built and learned to fly his own plane, and even played the guitar and sang. He did a lot of plumbing, concrete work, farm equipment and tractor repair. At one time, he dredged for gold in the Colorado Rockies, and he learned to facet gems, polish cabochons and make jewelry. Once during heavy rains, Spring Creek covered the road near his home, and the mailman could not get through on his rounds. Arthur saddled his old horse, took the mailbag, forded the creek, and delivered the mail. Arthur is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters, Gina and Julia; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews as well as Judys sons, Jimmy and Tom Cooke. Rufus Washington Evans, 90, died Aug. 16, 2001, at home in Beaumont, Texas. Patriarch of a large family, Mr. Evans survivors include daughters Karlene Wheeler of The Woodlands, Catherine Daugherty of Roswell, Georgia, Jean Hardy of Marathon, Texas, and Mary Cookie Evans Brown of Beaumont; and son Rufus Patrick Evans, also of Beaumont; sons-in-law Joseph O. Wheeler, Joseph P. Daugherty, John Michael Hardy; daughter-in-law Linda Beth Greene Evans; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include sisters Lillian Evans Davis of Elgin and Corpus Christi, and Gladys Evans McClendon of Elgin. Born January 29, 1911, at Sayersville, Bastrop County, Texas, Mr. Evans lived his entire life in Texas, graduating from high school in Elgin in 1929, and spending many years in Houston and Beaumont, where he worked for 42 years for the Gulf Oil Corporation, including a period as supervisor of the Lucas Terminal. In his long retirement, Mr. Evans lived for a time in Amarillo, Shenandoah, and Marathon and was well-known as an enthusiastic fisherman and skillful gardener. Preceding Mr. Evans in death was his wife of 63 years, Wilhelmina Stiebing Evans, who died in June 1998; his beloved son-in-law Charles N. Brown; his parents, Lily Johnson and George W. Evans, and brothers Luther Harris Evans, a former Librarian of the U.S. Congress and Director General of UNESCO; Leon Rogers Evans, Woodrow W. Evans, G. W. Evans, Jr., and sisters Ruby Roff and Alice E. McCreary. Rufus was "Daddy" to his children, "Papah" to his grandchildren, "Booster" to his family of origin, and "Stub" to his co-workers. He was greatly loved and loving, and will be remembered always for his examples of hard work, loyalty, and goodness. DAHSE James E. Dahse was born in Kenney, TX August 22, 1932 and died on that same day 69 years later at Cy-Fair Hospital. He lived in Waller, TX most of his life. John and Dee moved to Monaville in Waller County after his retirement in December 1995. He was an avid stamp collector and model railroad builder. Preceded in death by his parents, infant brother and grandson, James L. Herring Jr. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, DeAlva J. Stewart Backer; daughters, Rosanne Herring of Houston, Mary M. and her husband Damon R. Boyd of Austin; son, Christopher M. Backer, Sr. and wife Denise of Monaville; grandchildren, Coby, Adrianna and Christopher (C.J.) M. Backer, Jr. Great-grandson, James (Trey) L. Herring, III of Topeka, KS, along with numerous family members, friends, and good neighbors. The family wants to give special thanks to Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital, Home Care Solutions, The Hospice of Brazos Valley, all the doctors and nurses who provided loving care to John and for the prayers, cards and visits during his illness. John requested no services be held. His wishes were for a private burial, after his cremation, at the Monaville Cemetery, which John helped maintain with other family members since 1978. He was loved by many and will be missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Johns name may be made to the American Cancer Society or one of the home care organizations listed above.
