Uncle Bennie

That’s what he was to the people that loved him most, his nieces and nephews. Uncle Bennie never married, and never had a family of his own. He was too busy helping take care of Grandma, Meta Schiel, who had the overwhelming task of trying to raise 5 young children after Grandpa, Louis Schiel, died. He continued his role of caregiver for his mom, living with her until she died at the age of 93.

He worked at Katy Water Well Drilling Company for 15 years, then for Harris County, where he retired with 26 years of service. Uncle Bennie attended Christ United Church in Cypress, Texas, where he was baptized as an infant and confirmed on August 18, 1940.

Uncle Bennie loved his nieces and nephews, and took great pleasure in inviting them over to eat lunch that he had cooked for them. He also loved visiting the Hardware store, almost on a daily basis, where he would visit with the family and customers. He took great pleasure in talking to folks, and had a mind sharp as a tack. He had such an incredible memory, and would often times surprise people with the details he could remember about things they had told him, or significant dates such as birthdays.

We will miss Uncle Bennie, but are extremely grateful that we were blessed to have him as part of our family, and part of our lives, for so many years.

Walter Schiel, Jr., Barbara White, Florence Peterson, Gloria Treichel, Louis Schiel and Donna Hill.

GARRETT

Arthur Melvin Garrett was born 8-18-17 near Monaville, to James A. and Stella Garrett. Arthur was well-known in Waller County as a hard worker and devout Christian.

He loved playing 42 and was an excellent gardener. A self-taught electrician, he installed the electric wiring in many businesses along old Highway 290 into Houston and in most of the residences near his home in the Field Store-Union area. He built three houses, three barns, countless outbuildings, and the Quonset hut on Old Hwy 290 and FM 362. As a member of IBEW 716, his proudest accomplishments were his work on the Ship Channel Bridge at Corpus Christi and in Bush Intercontinental Airport’s Terminal C. He grew peanuts for the war effort during World War II, blacksmithed, welded, raised chickens, gardened organically, ran cattle, built and learned to fly his own plane, and even played the guitar and sang. He did a lot of plumbing, concrete work, farm equipment and tractor repair. At one time, he dredged for gold in the Colorado Rockies, and he learned to facet gems, polish cabochons and make jewelry.

Once during heavy rains, Spring Creek covered the road near his home, and the mailman could not get through on his rounds. Arthur saddled his old horse, took the mailbag, forded the creek, and delivered the mail.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters, Gina and Julia; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews as well as Judy’s sons, Jimmy and Tom Cooke.

ADAMS

Sara Faye Adams was born on September 27, 1924 in Phenix City, Alabama to Lemearle and Dan Akin. She married her high school sweetheart, Joe Adams Sr. in 1943 while he was on a three day pass from military service during WWII. During the war their love was recorded in letters treasured by Faye and passed on to her grandchildren who will treasure them always.

Before Joe Sr.’s death on December 16, 1972 the couple bore two children. Joe Jr. was born September 23, 1947. He loved to travel and his homecomings were always met with eager anticipation by Faye. Joe died on May 10, 1994 while living in Guatemala. Faye’s daughter Joyce, born on February 14, 1956 and her husband Joel would grow to be her faithful support system, caretakers, and guides through years of both struggles and victories. Joyce also brought her three grandchildren that filled Faye’s life with joy. Joel Jr. was her "number one grandson", born on March 19, 1979, who always made her beam with pride and treated her like a queen. Jenny was next, born July 11, 1980, who listened and shared her heart and dreams.

John Michael, born November 29, 1984 was grandma’s "tadpole" who made her laugh, and sigh, and who even made her dance.

While Faye’s family contributed to much of her fulfillment, she also had many other friends and hobbies that made her smile. She loved birds and flowers, food and pictures, she loved old movies and good music. She was surrounded by neighbors who she greatly enjoyed and remained amazingly loyal to old friends throughout the ages.

Though Faye died on March 29, 2002 she will live on forever in the hearts of her family and the many others that were touched by her life and her gifts to the world.

ROBERT

In Memory of

FRANK ROBERT

Frank Robert, loving husband of Wendell Robert for 63 years, passed away on July 13, 2002. Frank was from a family of 11 children; 5 brothers, and 6 sisters.

He was a kind and gentle man, a beloved husband, and a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He and Wendell have been residents of the Conroe area since 1974.

Frank was born in Latexo, Texas on September 30, 1912. He graduated from Texas A & M with a B.S. degree in 1937. He received his Master of Education degree in 1952 and was an honor student at A & M in 1935.

Frank’s teaching career covered 3 areas of south Texas. He taught agriculture for 2 years in Crockett; served as a principal, science teacher, and agriculture teacher for 25 years in Waller; and he was a science teacher at Washington Junior High in Conroe for 3 years.

In service to his country, Frank was a Second Lieutenant in the Army during WWII in 1941 for three and a half years. He was a P.O.W. in Europe for three months and was awarded the Purple Heart in 1955.

On the home front, he served his community in Waller as an Election worker for 21 years. During that time, he was an Election clerk for 10 years. In the Conroe area, he was an Election judge for 10 years.

Frank not only served in all the above areas, but also he served his church community. For 58 years or more, he was a deacon in the Baptist Church in Waller and in Conroe. He and Wendell have been members of the First Baptist Church in Conroe for 28 years, since 1974. During those years he also was a leader and a Sunday School teacher.

As a devoted family man, Frank was always there with help, advice, and a kind word for those in trouble. It did not matter the day or time, family and friends knew they could count on him in times of sorrow or emergency. He would be there for them.

Frank enjoyed life. He loved all sports, and he played baseball as a youngster. It carried over to his son, Bill Robert, who played and coached football for many years, and to his grandson, Jeffrey, who played and coached soccer. Frank and Wendell spent many hours and traveled many miles to encourage them and to see their games.

Frank had many hobbies over the years which he gratefully shared with friends. He loved to fish, and at one time, fed almost the whole town of Waller with his great catches! He also loved gardening, ceramics, and woodworking. His home was always open and welcome to friends and family. He shared with everyone, his time, his talents, his food, a listening ear, and his kind heart. He truly was a picture of Jesus, the One who served. He will be missed greatly.

His survivors include his wife, Wendell Robert; his son and wife, Bill and Marzie Robert; a granddaughter and husband, Wendy and Blake Anderson of Murfreesboro, TN who are the parents of his three great-grandchildren, Colton, Carrie, and Cason Anderson; and his grandson and wife, Jeffrey and Heather Robert of Mongomery, TX. Other surviving family members include a sister, Linda Woods in Woodville; two brothers, Elbert Robert of Conroe and Edward Robert and wife, Audrey, who reside in Maryland; as well as various nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
